On 10th September 2026, the IIT Guwahati campus community observed World Suicide Prevention Day through two separate initiatives — one led by the District Administration and one organised by the Institute itself — both anchored in the global theme "Changing the Narrative on Suicide" and its call to action, "Start the Conversation."
District Administration Organises Awareness Generation & Screening Camp
The day's first event was a District Administration-led programme, held in association with IIT Guwahati, the Students' Welfare Board, and Saathi Club. It featured an awareness-generation-cum-screening camp alongside an interactive session with consultant psychiatrists, drawing over 150 attendees, including students from IIT Guwahati, Kendriya Vidyalaya IIT Guwahati, and local schools and colleges.

The screening camp saw strong participation from the Institute's outsourced employees. Prof. Devendra Jalihal, Director, IIT Guwahati, attended as Guest of Honour, underscoring the importance of a compassionate campus community and normalising conversations around mental well-being.
Students' Welfare Board Organises Campus Awareness March
Later that afternoon, the Institute's own Students' Welfare Board organised a Campus Awareness March, starting from the Mini Auditorium and drawing nearly 200 students, faculty, and staff.

Prof. Jalihal, along with the Dean of Student Affairs and the Dean of Academic Courses, joined the march, stopping at student hostels along the route to speak directly with
students about campus life and offer support ahead of the mid-semester examinations.
The march concluded with a Candle Lighting ceremony at the administration building, a moment of reflection and solidarity with anyone facing difficult times.

Together, the two events reflected a shared institutional and civic commitment to mental health awareness on campus.
