IIT Guwahati conducted a Basic Course on Remote Sensing and GIS Technologies and Applications from 11th to 20th September 2026 at the Seminar Hall, Centre for Educational Technology. The programme was coordinated by Prof. Rishikesh Bharti, Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Guwahati.

Designed for defence officers and personnel, the 10-day training focused on building practical skills in space-based technologies for operational planning, surveillance, resource management, and decision-making. The course covered a comprehensive range of topics, including satellite image interpretation, digital image processing, image classification, photogrammetry, thermal and microwave remote sensing, hyperspectral data analysis, and GIS-based spatial analysis.

Through a combination of expert lectures and hands-on laboratory sessions, participants learned to acquire, process, and analyse geospatial information for real-world applications such as border management, terrain assessment, disaster response, infrastructure monitoring, environmental surveillance, and flood and landslide mapping.

The programme aimed to strengthen the technical capacity of defence and security personnel to effectively use geospatial intelligence and satellite-derived information in support of national security and strategic decision-making. It was offered in response to a capacity-building initiative by the Ministry of Home Affairs, aimed at enhancing the utilisation of space technology across Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and the Intelligence Bureau (IB).
