The Russian Science Foundation (RSF) roundtable “Risk Management in Microelectronics: From Research to Product" at the Microelectronics 2026 Forum in Russia brought together representatives of federal executive authorities, the industry expert community, heads of Russian microelectronics companies, RSF grantees, and leading scientists from Russia, India and Vietnam.

IIT Guwahati was represented at the roundtable by Professor Achalkumar Ammathnadu Sudhakar (Dept of Chemistry, IIT Guwahati), who delivered a talk entitled “Innovative Projects and Solutions within the Framework of Scientific Cooperation between Russia and India”.

In his presentation, Professor Achalkumar Ammathnadu Sudhakar presented the results of joint research carried out with the support of the RSF international programme and outlined the key directions of Russia-India scientific cooperation in the field of microelectronics. Special attention was paid to risk management mechanisms in joint projects, as well as to models of interaction between academic institutions and industry in the two countries.

"Novel nanocomposite materials based on discotic liquid crystals are the key to highly efficient organic optoelectronics. Our research on perylene and nanographene derivatives opens the way to tunable columnar phases and ambipolar conductivity. Together with our Russian colleagues, we are developing defect-free thin films, measuring charge carrier mobility, and creating prototypes of OLEDs, OFETs and solar cells. Russia-India cooperation is an example of effective integration for breakthroughs in microelectronics,” noted Professor Achalkumar Ammathnadu Sudhakar.

Within the framework of the roundtable, experts discussed risk management at different stages of the technology life cycle — from fundamental research to serial production; current state policy in the field of microelectronics development and the role of grant instruments in its implementation; key results of projects supported by the RSF; mechanisms of interaction between fundamental science, applied research and industrial enterprises; barriers hindering the commercialization of applied research results; as well as the opportunities and limitations of private investment in high-risk projects.

Experts noted that microelectronics has traditionally been one of the most knowledge-intensive and strategically significant industries, where the time gap between a fundamental discovery and industrial implementation can span decades. It is applied research that serves as the bridge connecting laboratory experiments with serial production, and scientific ideas with real products and technologies.

Professor Achalkumar Ammathnadu Sudhakar expressed his gratitude to the Russian Science Foundation for the invitation to participate in the Microelectronics 2026 Forum and confirmed IIT Guwahati’s willingness to further develop joint scientific programmes and strengthen Russia-India cooperation in the field of microelectronics.
