IIT Guwahati has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Tata Electronics Private Limited to strengthen semiconductor Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging (ATMP) education, skill development and research in India.

The collaboration will create a Centre of Excellence (CoE) at the IIT Guwahati campus, with a focus on developing industry-ready talent and advancing research in semiconductor packaging technologies.

IIT Guwahati will be responsible for leading the development and delivery of education programs including diploma-level training and BTech-level engineering programs in semiconductor ATMP. These programs will also include practical, hands-on training as a part of the curriculum.

In addition to the establishment of a Centre of Excellence at IIT Guwahati, the collaboration will enable:

  • Identification of engineering colleges, universities and polytechnics to expand access to semiconductor-focused education and training.

  • Providing hands-on training opportunities to students from partner engineering colleges, polytechnics and other educational institutions.

  • Jointly developing industry-relevant course content, educational resources and specialised training programs.

  • Training faculty members from participating educational institutions to strengthen semiconductor-related teaching capabilities.

  • Training opportunities for students at Tata Electronics.

  • Opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate students for collaborative research in semiconductor packaging, assembly, testing and related technologies.

There is a growing need for a skilled workforce in the semiconductor industry. This collaboration will develop industry-aligned educational and training programs. It will also strengthen the semiconductor talent ecosystem in Assam and the Northeast region by creating opportunities for students from engineering colleges, polytechnics and other educational institutions.

Speaking about the collaboration with Tata Electronics Pvt. Ltd., Prof. Devendra Jalihal, Director, IIT Guwahati, said,

“This initiative aims to connect academic institutions, industry and students through specialised education, practical training and collaborative research. By identifying relevant institutions across Assam and supporting the development of semiconductor-focused curricula, the collaboration will broaden access to specialised technical education and strengthen the regional talent pipeline.”

This collaboration between IIT Guwahati and Tata Electronics Pvt. Ltd. marks a major milestone towards making India a global leader in semiconductor technology and workforce development.
